It should be obvious: a homeless shelter is where you go when you can’t pay rent.
I’ve been working for months with other NY state legislators to stop Mayor Bloomberg’s shocking plan to charge rent at New York City’s homeless shelters. And I have to say, it’s so heartening to have the phones ringing and emails flooding in from people like you.
We’re just weeks or even days away from the vote that could stop this terrible idea in its tracks — but we still need your help.
Since Monday, more than 2,500 New Yorkers have signed the Working Families petition to stop the plan — but Bloomberg administration lobbyists are pushing back hard. Can you help us out by signing the petition or forwarding this on to your friends? It’s important that my colleagues hear from as many people as possible.

Up in Albany, I’ve seen the impact of your work firsthand. For months, the Mayor’s misguided plan to charge rent in homeless shelters was barely noticed at all — but after you started speaking out this week, the issue has been covered in the New York Times, Daily News, FOX-5 and more.
Most importantly, my fellow state legislators are paying attention. They’re the ones with the power to stop this outrageous idea, but they might not do it unless they hear from thousands of outraged New Yorkers who know that charging rent to those who clearly can’t afford housing will just make a bad situation worse.
We don’t have much time. I’m asking everyone to sign the petition, post it on Facebook, and forward this email to everyone you know – before it’s too late.
