In a close race, Working Families Party voters can make the difference. The returns are still coming in from across the state, but it’s already clear that the WFP ballot line was the margin of victory in some big races across the state.
In the race for Binghamton Mayor, Matt Ryan won by a hair – only 56 votes. How many came from Working Families supporters? 383.
In many races, our precise contribution is often invisible where it counts the most – the primary vote. That said, there are a few instances where candidates running only on our line secured about a third of the vote, as Corey Ellis did in Albany.
Elsewhere, the WFP ballot line racked up impressive gains as well. Lydia White in Erie received 11% of her vote on our line. Brad Lander (Brooklyn) received 12%. Glen Wilkerson (Tompkins) received 13%.
As the political class slowly shifts it’s gaze to the 2010 races, let’s pause for a moment and remind ourselves: it’s good to have the support of Working Families voters.
