In his State of the State address yesterday, Gov. Paterson called for “shared sacrifice” to get New York through one of the worst recessions we’ve seen in decades.
But the budget proposal the Governor presented last month would mean anything but.
Billions of dollars in cuts to healthcare, education, and hundreds of essential public services. Billions more in mostly regressive fees and taxes, on everything from driving to downloading music to SUNY and CUNY tuition. Instead of soak the rich, it’s soak the middle class.
Working Families supporters have flooded Albany with more than 10,000 letters demanding we make sure the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes so working families don’t bear the pain of the fiscal crisis alone. With the legislature about to start debating the details of the budget, we can’t stop now.
