WFP Statement on Ron Lauder’s Support for Mayor’s Term Limits Proposal

For Immediate Release: October 8, 2008

The Working Families Party released today the following statement on Ron Lauder’s announced support of Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to change term limits legislatively. It can be attributed to Dan Cantor, Working Families Party Executive Director:

“There’s something profoundly wrong with our democracy when the opinions of the city’s billionaires are all that seem to matter. Mike Bloomberg has had a solid record of running a good, open government. This kind of deal is anything but, and he knows better.

People voted twice for term limits not because Ron Lauder told them to, but because they believed in it. Term limits should be up to those same voters, not just two men, no matter how wealthy.

This is a change to the city’s constitution, and you simply should not rush to judgment on something this big. There’s time to put this before the voters, and Ron Lauder can vote just like everyone else when that election is held.”
