The following statement regarding the November special session called today by Gov. David Paterson can be attributed to Dan Cantor, Working Families Party Executive Director:
“The Governor is right to try to meet the budget gap head on, both for this year and next. Our plea to him will be for a remedy that includes an economic stimulus package to keep people working, the “circuit-breaker” to lower property taxes for people who are choking on their current bills, and an increase in the income tax rate paid by the top 1% or so. You take all of this, add in some smart cost-savings and prudent cuts, and we can keep our society strong. The Governor has a complex and multi-pronged challenge on his hands, but we are confident that he and the legislature can meet it.”
