New York - The Working Families Party (WFP) today cheered Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s dominant reelection victory in the 64th Assembly District, calling Silver a “constant presence for working families.”
“The billionaires who own New York’s newspapers don’t care very much about the issues that matter to everyday New Yorkers. So Shelly Silver’s insistence that non-wealthy New Yorkers deserve a fair shake constantly annoys them. What the voters said today, loud and clear, was that Silver has been there for them over the years, and today they returned the favor,” said Dan Cantor, WFP Executive Director.
“The people know, even if the pundits don’t, that it was Shelly who stood up to right-wing Republicans and their allies during the long Pataki years, and he has established himself as a champion of affordable housing, funding for public schools, and access to healthcare. That’s enough to win any election anywhere in America.”
The WFP received 155,184 votes for Eliot Spitzer in 2006 on its ballot line - “Row E.”
